Microsorum pteropus ‘Windeløv’, commonly known as Windeløv Java Fern, is one of the most distinctive and attractive Java Fern varieties available in the aquarium hobby. Named after Tropica founder Holger Windeløv, this unique cultivar is prized for its beautifully branched leaf tips, which create an elegant, lace-like appearance unlike any other aquatic fern.
This slow-growing plant typically reaches 15–20 cm in height and width, making it an excellent choice for both small and large aquariums. Its intricate foliage adds texture and visual interest to aquascapes, where it works particularly well as a feature plant attached to driftwood, rocks, or decorative hardscape elements.
Like all Java Ferns, Microsorum pteropus ‘Windeløv’ should not have its rhizome buried in the substrate, as this can cause the plant to deteriorate. Instead, it should be tied or glued to hardscape where it will naturally anchor itself over time. Exceptionally hardy and undemanding, it thrives in a wide range of water conditions and is ideal for beginners as well as experienced aquarists. It is also highly resistant to herbivorous fish, making it a reliable addition to community aquariums.
