Cladophora aegagropila, commonly known as Marimo Moss Ball, is a unique and eye-catching addition to any freshwater aquarium. Despite its common name, it is not actually a moss or a true aquatic plant, but a naturally occurring spherical algae that forms in lakes through the gentle action of waves.
Its vibrant green colour and distinctive round shape make it a popular choice for aquascaping, nano tanks, shrimp aquariums, and decorative displays. Marimo Moss Balls are incredibly hardy, low-maintenance, and suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
Growing between 3 and 10 cm in diameter, these algae balls require only low to moderate lighting and do not need added CO₂ to thrive. To maintain their attractive spherical shape, simply rotate them occasionally during routine tank maintenance.
Marimo Moss Balls can also be divided into smaller sections, which will gradually form new spheres over time. Alternatively, pieces can be attached to rocks, driftwood, or other hardscape elements to create a natural green carpet effect.
Native to lakes across the Northern Hemisphere and protected in parts of Japan, Marimo Moss Balls are a fascinating living decoration that brings a touch of nature and tranquillity to any aquarium.
